Make Your Own Essential Oil Diffuser

This could be the perfect gift for yourself or a loved one this Christmas.  The materials are easy to source and make for a beautiful and cost-effective gift.  Creating your own essential oil diffuser can be a fun and creative DIY project.  Here’s a simple method, providing you with a few options to create three custom fragrances.

Materials Required

  1. Small glass bottle
  2. Bamboo or wooden reeds
  3. Essential oils of your choice
  4. Carrier oil (helps dilute the essential oils)
  5. Decorative elements (optional)

1.    Select a Container: Choose a small, shallow container to hold the essential oil mixture. This could be a small glass or ceramic bowl, vase, or any container with a wide surface area.

2.    Choose Bamboo or Wooden Reeds: You can use bamboo or wooden reeds, or diffuser sticks to absorb and disperse the essential oils. Make sure they are porous and can easily absorb and release the fragrance.

3.    Prepare the Essential Oil Blend: Decide on the essential oils you want to use. You can create your own blend based on your preferences. Some popular choices include lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, citrus oils, and more.  Start with about 20-25 drops of essential oil in total.  Below, we provide 3 different aromas we recommend.  It is advisable to dilute the essential oils, with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or jojoba oil. Use about 1-2 tablespoons of carrier oil for every 20-25 drops of essential oil.

4.    Assemble the Diffuser: Pour the essential oil blend into the container. If you’re using a carrier oil, mix it well with the essential oils. Place the wooden reeds or bamboo skewers into the container, allowing them to soak up the oil.

5.    Turn over the Reeds: To enhance the scent, turn over the reeds every few days to ensure that the fragrance is evenly distributed.  This also helps refresh the scent.

6.    Optional Decorative Elements: If you want to add a decorative touch, consider placing decorative elements around the container.  This could be pebbles, or other decorative items that complement the style of the room.  We like to incorporate natural materials, according to the season, such as cloves, cinnamon bark, rosemary sprigs, or short pine needles.

7.    Enjoy: Place your DIY diffuser in a well-ventilated area, and enjoy the natural fragrance as it fills the room.

Remember that the intensity of the scent can be adjusted by adding more or fewer drops of essential oil. Experiment with different oil combinations until you find the blend that suits your preferences.
